Mano Juan, Saona Island is the most important nesting area for marine turtles in the entire Dominican Republic, and while Hawksbill turtles and indeed many other marine turtles are nearing extinction in this country, thanks to the efforts of the Turtle Sanctuary the population of turtles has been slowly growing in the area. The simple sanctuary is manage by Mr. Negro, a former fisherman who having previously hunted turtles, has now dedicated his life to saving them. At the sanctuary, visitors learn all about the turtles, are able to see the eggs and sometimes hold the baby turtles.
